How to Prevent, Protect & Repair Hair Damage

You probably see all sorts of shampoo or conditioner ads that claim to fix split ends, but let’s start by acknowledging the fact that the only way to fix split ends is to cut them off. You can’t mend split ends, but you can trim them away and give the hair a chance to grow out again under more favorable conditions.

Preventing Split Ends

On the other hand, you can prevent split ends to some extent by keeping your hair from drying out. The main causes of split ends are time and dryness. Drying and aging hair tends to become brittle and break: keeping it in good shape can hold split ends at bay longer than usual, so treating your hair with kindness is a good rule.
Ethnic Hair can be prone to more split ends

African American women often have a tougher time keeping the split ends away: their hair tends to be thinner and fragile, easily damaged. Keeping breakage to a minimum involves avoiding heat, permanent or straightening fluids and daily styling with irons or hair driers. Coloring hair weakens its structure and makes it even weaker, so that women with black hair who want to use colorants run the risk of thinning their hair or winding up with bald spots. African American hair demands extra gentle treatment and frequent conditioning with rich emollients such as shea butter or coconut oil. These natural remedies are also ideal for keeping the scalp healthy. Keeping Black hair in its natural state is healthiest—forget straighteners or colors and your hair will be stronger and shinier.

Tight braids can also damage your hair and may even damage the roots, which can cause you to lose your hair in places, so keep it loose as possible. If you must color your hair, go for henna, which smoothes the hair shaft and deposits the color atop the hair instead of opening the cuticle and adding the color inside the hair. Henna doesn’t last quite as long as chemically-based permanent colors, but it actually makes hair healthier when you use it: other colors make it weaker.

No forever solution to stop spilt ends for occurring

Eventually, all hair will develop split ends if it isn’t cared for properly. Most hair experts recommend getting a trim every 6-8 weeks, so ends don’t have a chance to dry out and split. The beauty of your hair really shows when it’s shiny, glossy and thick. Keeping the tips trimmed is protection from further damage: split ends tend to work their way up the hair shaft as it sustains further damage over time. The solution to split ends is to act quickly: don’t skip the trip to the salon, or get your hair stylist to teach you how to trim your own hair if you don’t like to go in that often.

Breakage and Frizzy Hair Texture is Not from Split Ends!

Don’t mistake frizzies for split ends. If your hair looks frumpy or frowsy, the ends might be just fine, but the hair shaft is roughed up from humidity in the air or dryness from harsh shampoos. If you’ve had your ends trimmed but still see a fuzzy halo around your hair, try using one of the new hair smoothing treatments. Usually consisting of a solution of dimethicone, these smoothers add a gloss to your hair that makes it shiny and more manageable. They don’t really do anything to nourish or improve your hair, but they coat the hair the same way furniture polish makes your tables look shiny, and they wash out with each shampoo.

Natural Alternatives and Self-Bronzer Products

Most stylists will happily disclose the best accessory for any outfit is a great tan! However, getting tanned skin is not always a healthy ritual to undertake. Many doctors continue to issue warnings against sun tanning and sunburns due to their relation to skin cancer. However, spending too much time in the sun not only increases the risk of skin cancer but also increases the opportunity for wrinkles, fine lines and skin damage. For ladies craving tanned skin, the best alternative to old fashioned tanning in the sun or tanning bed is sunless tanning. Getting a sunless tan has never been easier!

Natural Looking Sunless Tanning Options

Today’s self tanners offer a more natural look than ever before. The first generation of self tanners often yielded orange results, with impossible application techniques required. However, the new generations of self tanners come in less concentrated formulas. Most are bronzer products that allow users to gradually tan, over a short period of time. With the tan building with each application, there is no risk of overdoing it all at once and ending up with a deep, uneven tan. Popular brands like Hawaiian Tropic and Bain de Soleil are even creating great moisturizer self tanning cream options for those interested in self tanning.

Other options in self tanning include spray tan booths and indoor airbrush tanning salons. A spray tan booth can be a quick way for anyone to get a fast sunless tan. Typically, they require you to wear a paper bikini, step into a spray tan booth, press a button and wait to be sprayed by the booth’s airbrush system. Most booths take less than two minutes to complete the job. Those who want to ensure they’re getting a seamless application can pay to be airbrushed with self tanner. Many high end salons are now offering this service which does prove to be a bit more costly. However, the results are very natural.

Best Fake Tan Products and Self Bronzers

If you’re choosing to apply self tanning lotion or cream at home, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, exfoliating your skin is important to getting an even application. Dead skin cells can soak in extra color pigment and leave you with splotches. It’s a good idea to apply a thin layer of lotion on your elbows, knees and ankle areas before applying self tanning lotions. This will prevent the color from sticking to these thick skinned areas. Also, be prepared to stay away from water or even rain for a few hours after your application. If you get wet shortly after using a self tanner, you may appear spotty in color.

UV Protection From Sunless Tanning Products

The bona fide best thing about sunless tanning options is the fact they are extremely safe to use. There is no risk of being exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays and thus there is a guarantee self tanning products will offer protection and often even prevention against fine lines and wrinkles.

Get to know your skin flaw. No matter what type of flaw you have (blood vessel? pimple? vein?), you need to know what it looks like in daylight. Before you can select the right shade …

Get to know your skin flaw. No matter what type of flaw you have (blood vessel? pimple? vein?), you need to know what it looks like in daylight. Before you can select the right shade of concealer, you have to determine: (1) the color you want to neutralize (red vessels around the nose? blue veins around the eyes? green-tinged dark circles?), and (2) your base skin tone. To do that you need to go outside and look at your skin in daylight.

Create a beauty emergency arsenal kit containing the products you need specific to your skin flaw. At the very least, your kit should contain three items: a neutralizing concealer in pencil or cream form, a concealer that matches or is one shade lighter than your skin tone, and translucent power. You don’t even need a makeup brush; you can just tap the powder over the concealer with a finger pad to give it staying power.

Practice applying the makeup and then look at your handiwork in all kinds of light. You want a natural-looking, even skin tone. You don’t want to overcorrect, says Darac, acclaimed celebrity makeup artist and owner of Darac Beauty. Applying too much product draws attention to the problem you’re trying to cover. You don’t want flat, allover color that is one shade, either, he says, because it doesn’t look real. Experiment, he adds. “For example, when stippling around the eyes, start with two colors instead of one. The first shade should be as close to your skin as you can, and the second shade slightly lighter. Start on the outer edge of the dark circle and move inward, stippling the concealer lightly. Then stipple the lighter shade over that.” But not perfectly, he notes. “Don’t overcorrect it. It looks fake. Skin is nuanced and shadowed; it’s not one shade.”

Use great products. Darac recommends:

● The Being True mineral line of cosmetics, including Perfecting Illuminating Concealer, which comes in three shades. This line also contains idebenone, an antioxidant said to help regenerate aged skin.

● Everything Pencils, which can cover just about any skin issue you have. Available in six shades.

Darac recommends getting at least two shades of pencils — or more. Neutralize, powder and then apply matching or lighter concealer. The pencils are great for drawing on spider veins.

● If you are coming from the gym, or about to go into a rainstorm, Darac suggests using Laura Dorf’s Transformer to keep the concealer in place. Created to transform eye shadow into eyeliner, Transformer can be mixed with any makeup, he says, to give it a fixative quality and help it adhere to the face.

● Finally, for translucent powder, it’s hard to beat Sifted Blur powder, which comes from Darac’s line of cosmetics. The powder is extremely light and actually contains hydrating qualities, preventing the cakey result you can get with some powders. Also, it won’t get darker as the day wears on, as some powders do.

“Wait joyfully with great expectations”
“Millions of miracles have been dashed on the rocks of impatience”
“What happens in your mind is likely to happen in your future”
“Find something that makes you laugh today”
“The secret of every failure is broken focus”
“Focus on your desired future”
